Korea Adventure #2: Jeonju Trip

July 31, 2017

Visiting Jeonju was high up on my “things to do in Korea” list. It is famous for its delicious food and the beautiful Jeonju Hanok Village. When I asked Annalise if she wanted to go with me, she was more than excited!

Overall, this trip was a great experience. I was surprised at how small a city Jeonju is. Although I did not get to explore Jeonju outside of the Hanok Village, I got the impression that the Hanok Village was THE hot spot of the city. The village is also not that big, so I would not recommend a stay longer than two days. Having seen (and eaten) almost everything the village has to offer, Annalise and I actually ended up spending most of our last day charging our phones and cooling down in a cafe. Nonetheless, it is absolutely beautiful and I highly recommend visiting this village.

Jeonju, located in north Jeolla Province, is about a two-and-half hour bus ride from Seoul. I found that it is easier to go to Jeonju by bus than train because the Jeonju bus terminal is way closer to the Hanok Village than the Jeonju train station is. Also, the buses are super nice and are half the price of trains. The bus ride does not feel that long because the rest stop itself is an adventure. Go figure!

THE VILLAGE
THE FOOD
Everything I ate in Jeonju was absolutely delicious. I still daydream about the food I ate there! All the claims about Jeonju’s delectable food were proven true to me.
Meal #1: Jeonju Bibimbap (전주비빔밥) and Bean Sprout Soup with Rice (콩나물국밥)
We went to a restaurant called 300 Jib (삼백집). OMG these were absolutely amazing. I still cannot get it out of my head. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
Meal #2: Seok Galbi (석갈비)
For dinner, we had seok galbi (석갈비), which was also like heaven on my tongue.

The nice thing about the Jeonju Hanok Village is the nice assortment of modern cafes and traditional Korean restaurants. In between meals, we cooled ourselves down with iced americanos and smoothies at a cute coffee shop that showed a great view of the entire village.

Meal #3: Warm, Buttery Toast with Fresh Whipped Cream & Jam
Meal #4: Ddeok Galbi (떡갈비) at 교동떡갈비
The nice part about this restaurant was the great view we had of the village!
Jeonju Moju (모주)
Jeonju’s spin on the traditional makgeolli (rice wine). To be perfectly honest, I think I prefer regular makgeolli over moju. The moju had a strong ginseng-y taste, which is not surprising, considering the fact that it is essentially makgeolli with herbs. You can buy bottles of moju from the street shops!

LODGING

Our lodging for the night was one of the best parts of the trip! The “hotel” is built like a traditional Korean home, except it is completely renovated inside with full electricity and, more importantly, air conditioner!

We had a two-story room, where I slept on the first floor and Annalise slept on the second. This is the first floor, and as you can see from the photos, it has a TV and air conditioner!

These are the stairs to go to the second floor.
The pleasantly clean bathroom!
The Jeonju Hanok Village is the best Korean cultural village I have been to, way better than the Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul. There is so much to do and eat… I hope to go back to Jeonju one day to eat to my heart’s fullest desire.
Thank you for reading this post!
